Science - Grade 5
Research shows that one in five American jobs require intensive math and science training. Students need strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills. It is vital that our students build a strong foundation in these areas as early as possible. The science curriculum affords students with the chance to develop these skill areas. Science also provides an excellent opportunity for the hands-on experiential learning that students enjoy. The course of study in fifth grade science is designed to : (1) develop an understanding of science concepts and vocabulary; (2) promote an awareness of an ever-changing environment; and (30 provide an introduction to technical terms and devices. Units of study will include: the Scientific Method, Weather and Climate, Earth Systems, Dynamic Earth, Trash and Recycling, and Pennsylvania Agriculture.
Skyview students will have access to three science lab areas, as well as the Mallon Planetarium, for appropriate standards-based lessons.
After revising the fifth grade science Planned Course Document over the summer of 2009, fifth grade teachers are piloting various resource materials during the 2009-2010 year. As a result of that work they will be recommending new resource materials for possible purchase for use when the Skyview Upper Elementary School opens for the 2010-2011 academic year.
